Running Records
Running Records is a test we do to establish the independent reading level of children. The test involves students reading a set text, and then answering some comprehension questions about the story. We then count the number of errors made, and establish what level they have reached. Children do not reach a level unless they have answered all the comprehension questions correctly.
To read the story INDEPENDENTLY, students need to achieve greater than 95% accuracy. These are the levels that children take home (and is why many parents say, ‘this book is too easy!’)
At school, we challenge students by targeting their Guided Reading sessions to texts that are in their INSTRUCTIONAL level. This is between 90%-95% accuracy. During this time we practice specific strategies for becoming ‘expert readers’ and explore grammar, punctuation and comprehension.
